Dear
Friend,
Happy
It's-Finally-Summer! Welcome back to Sip of Soup, my free bi-monthly E-sip
offering a taste of insight and lessons to help you keep caring while
living a more balanced life. As Father's Day approaches, few of us can
deny the impact our dads had-and still have- on our lives. My dad was a
strong, stoic, hardworking farmer. His era and role models taught him to
be reserved about showing his affection. While I don't ever remember him
saying, "I love you," he showed us everyday how much he did. His love-his
lessons-continue to guide my life today.

Power
Daddy's been in heaven for nearly 40 years, but I
can still hear him coaching me - loving me:
On tough
times: "No matter how bad you think you've got it, you only have to look
around to see others worse off than you are. I complained I had no shoes,
until I saw a man who had no feet."
On good works: "No matter
how much I give, God's shovel (back to me) is bigger than mine."
On opportunities: "Make hay while the sun shines."
On
conformity: "If she jumps off the bridge, would you jump off too?"
On relationships: "Never let a dollar come between you and a friend
(or family.)"
On family: "Honor your mother." Period.
On balance: " There's time to work and a time to play and a time to
pray."
I'm sure you can write your own lists, with your
own lessons because each of our fathers brought something unique-who he
was, based on his family history, his knowledge, his role models. We need
to appreciate what our fathers gave, and forgive the rest. (Interestingly,
when the volunteer readers helped select the top 100 stories for
Chicken Soup for the Father and Daughter Soul, we ended up with an
entire chapter on forgiveness. See the next E-sip for more on
forgiving.)

Lessons
from LeAnn
Even if your dad was not perfect (and who is?),
you need to show your love. Now. Tell him all you appreciate about him.
Write him a letter, even if he's in heaven. Chicken Soup for the Father
and Daughter Soul has a blank page deliberately placed in the front
for you to write your own message.
Tell him.
Now.

Soup for
the Day; a healthy quote:
The words that a father speaks to
his children in the privacy of home are not heard by the world, but, as in
whispering galleries, they are clearly heard at the end and by posterity.
